Drawn to visual arts since childhood, she studied Chinese calligraphy in Taiwan and was often found happily playing with black ink and a brush for hours. She pursued science and academia for about three decades while longingly looked to the arts for self expression. When dissecting human cadavers, she wondered about becoming a medical illustrator; while developing x-ray films, she imagined herself in a darkroom for photography.
